Governor Scott Walker today announced that checks totaling more than $104 million for General Transportation Aids, Connecting Highway Aids, and Expressway Policing Aids have been sent to Wisconsin units of local government.
The October payments from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) include $100,879,916 in General Transportation Aids to 1,922 local units of government; $3,015,876 to 120 municipalities for Connecting Highway Aids; and $255,975 to Milwaukee County for Expressway Policing Aids.
This year, local governments will share an estimated $416.5 million from the state transportation fund to build and maintain local roads and bridges. In addition, Expressway Policing Aids support the Milwaukee County Sheriff Department’s patrol of Milwaukee expressways. Quarterly payments for towns, cities and villages in 2012 are sent the first Monday in January, April, July and October. County payments are made in three installments, with 25% of the total annual payment on the first Monday in January; 50% on the first Monday in July; and 25% on the first Monday in October.
General Transportation Aids help defray the costs of constructing, maintaining, and operating roads and streets under local jurisdiction. Connecting Highway Aids reimburse municipalities for maintenance and traffic control of certain state highways within municipalities.
Communities also receive state transportation fund revenues for public transit, elderly and disabled transportation, and airport and harbor development from WisDOT. State and federal funds will also be allocated for specific highway and bridge construction projects.
