Ceremony at Executive Residence Declares April 24 Wisconsin Teach Children to Save Day

MADISON, Wis. – Governor Walker declared April 24 as Wisconsin Teach Children to Save Day and commended financial literacy efforts in Wisconsin in an official proclamation presented to the Wisconsin Bankers Association (WBA). First Lady Tonette Walker presented the proclamation at a ceremony held at the Governor’s Executive Residence on Monday.

Robert Gorsuch, Oak Bank – Madison; Sara Baker, Ladysmith Federal Savings and Loan – Ladysmith and WBA President and CEO Rose Oswald Poels represented the WBA’s Bankers Promoting Financial Literacy program at the event. “Community outreach is an important aspect of being a banker,” said Oswald Poels. “It is important to recognize the efforts of bank staff to educate the next generation of homeowners, business leaders and educators about the importance of financial literacy.”

Teach Children to Save Day is an initiative sponsored by the WBA in Wisconsin. Currently in its 16th year, Teach Children to Save Day brings educators and bankers together in an effort to increase childhood education about the importance of saving and spending wisely. In 2011, 422 Wisconsin bankers reached out to their community to make a total of 826 Teach Children to Save Day presentations. Year-round, nearly 600 Wisconsin bankers reached a total of 63,895 Wisconsinites by giving over 2,000 presentations to students and adults on a variety of financial literacy topics that same year.
