MADISON—Due to overwhelming demand, the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters, in partnership with the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds, is pleased to announce a special encore Academy Evening talk with Dr. Richard Davidson. Davidson will explore The Emotional Life of Your Brain at 7:00 pm on Thursday, June 14, in Varsity Hall at Union South on the UW–Madison campus (1308 W. Dayton St.).
This talk is an encore presentation of Davidson’s April 3, 2012, talk at Union South, which was attended by a capacity crowd of nearly 500. Approximately 1,000 seats will be available for the June 14 encore event. Tickets are free, but must be reserved by ordering online through the Wisconsin Union box office at http://www.uniontheater.wisc.edu (limit four tickets). Those who reserve at least one week in advance will have their tickets mailed to them; this is strongly recommended. Tickets reserved less than a week in advance may be picked up at will-call in Union South the night of the event. Attendees who need parking are encouraged to use Lot 17 ramp (1525 Engineering Dr.), which is free after 4:30 pm. In his new book, Davidson and co-author Sharon Begley explore the concept of emotional styles, composed of individual dimensions like resilience, attention, and self-awareness. Davidson, a brain-research pioneer and Wisconsin Academy Fellow, offers a new model for our emotions: their origins, their power, and how we can change them if we wish. He will share new and useful ways to look at ourselves, develop a sense of well-being, and live more meaningful lives.Copies of Davidson’s book will be available for sale, and a book signing will follow the talk.

About Dr. Davidson
Richard Davidson, PhD, is a William James and Vilas Research Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at UW–Madison. He has published more than 250 articles, chapters and reviews, has edited thirteen books, and is the author of the new book (with Sharon Begley) The Emotional Life of Your Brain (Penguin, 2012). Davidson has received numerous awards for his research, including the most distinguished award for science given by the American Psychological Association, the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award. In 2003 Davidson was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and he became a Fellow of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters the following year. Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2006, the year he was also awarded the first Mani Bhaumik Award by UCLA for advancing the understanding of the brain and conscious mind in healing.
