Milwaukee, Wisconsin (September 12, 2012) — Wipfli LLP (Wipfli) announced that John Bartell has joined the firm as a consulting partner focused on growing the revenue cycle consulting practice in the firm’s health care industry practice. In his role with Wipfli, Bartell brings more than 33 years of clinical, audit and assurance experience specializing in working with health care entities, which includes more than 14 years of expertise in Medicare requirements on clinical, financial and compliance criteria.

Prior to joining Wipfli, Bartell was an owner of Bay Area Healthcare Consulting, a consulting firm, and EBB Coding Solutions, a subsidiary coding company. As a principal with the consulting firm, he provided guidance to health care providers on Medicare compliance, coding and billing while assisting them with optimizing their revenues.

His prior experience also includes a senior manager position with a national health care consulting firm, Certus Corporation, where he was instrumental in assisting hospitals obtain compliant charge masters while enhancing their revenues. Bartell developed audit criteria, which was instrumental in identifying actual over/under payments for a national home health agency that was being investigated by the OIG. His expertise was key to the agency’s attorneys in reaching a resolution with the OIG and AUSA. He also held several positions with a Medicare Fiscal Intermediary (National Government Services – Milwaukee), including Medical Review Specialist, Fraud Investigator, Contract Coordinator and Customer Service Manager, where he acquired extensive knowledge of Medicare operations, including Medical Review, Claims Processing, Medicare Secondary Payer, Program Safeguards, Systems, EDI, Provider Payment, Provider Audit, Beneficiary and Provider Services. Throughout these departments, he developed an understanding of medical coverage criteria, coding and billing requirements, and a thorough knowledge of applicable federal regulations.

Bartell is an active member of the Wisconsin Medical Credit Association, the Healthcare Financial Management Association and the American Association of Healthcare Administrative Management. He is also an active speaker and has shared his expertise with over 5,400 health care providers nationwide through seminars, training programs and written instructions that have assisted providers in understanding complex federal requirements and meeting compliance criteria. He holds a bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Wisconsin.
