KOHLER, Wis. – It’s one thing to take a class and learn anatomy and yoga philosophy. It’s quite another thing to build a business, a career and a life during one focused teacher training program.

That’s what sets Deborah Williamson’s approach to yoga teacher training apart from the myriad programs available today.

“I give my students tools for teaching, but also tools to create a yoga business that is not only viable but sustainable, healthy and of great value to their communities,” says Williamson, who has been teaching yoga and training others to teach for a quarter century. Based in Wisconsin, Williamson travels 75% of the year training people to teach yoga, with six programs offered this year alone.

A long-time studio owner, Williamson gives her cell number to everyone she teaches.

“I mentor my students for life,” she says. “They teach live classes for the general public their very first weekend in training all the way through to graduation. Almost all of them have teaching jobs long before training is done. And if they have questions, be it ten weeks or ten years after training, I am committed to being there for them.”

* Given the explosive number of yoga teacher trainings in the United States, please consider writing an article about how students should choose their program, whom to train with and what values are important in a training. Deborah Williamson is available as a source for any story on yoga teacher trainings. She can also provide sources from her training programs and colleagues who offer trainings. *

Merely 25 years ago, yogis had to travel to India or bring a teacher to the States if they wanted to build a yoga career. Not today. Many studios offer teacher trainings, which people take for a variety of reasons – to further their study of yoga, to add skills to an existing career, or to follow a new path and leave the rat race.

In 2008, fitness workers held 261,100 jobs in the U.S. Research shows that job growth will continue in the fitness field, as health clubs expand, more yoga studios open and more Americans recognize the value of regular exercise, especially formats which combine a mind-body focus. As a result, research shows that this field should see a 29% employment growth through 2018, much faster than most occupations.

In 2010, 14.3 million Americans practiced yoga, a rise from 4.3 million in 2001. In 2005, about 70,000 people held yoga teacher certifications, according to statistics from the North American Studio Alliance.

This year, Williamson is offering six teacher trainings. Her teacher trainings include other certifications at no charge, like Yoga Body Bootcamp™ and Yoga Life Coaching™, Williamson specials.

“Teacher training is much more than learning how to move students in and out of poses,” says Williamson. “Whoever you train with should be interested in your long-term success and growth. For your time and money, you want a training that goes beyond basic instruction into a life-changing experience, for you, and for your future students.”

Judd Albring, owner of Power Yoga Chicago, invited Williamson to lead training at his studio in the fall.

“We believe in teaching from the heart,” he says. “We have no rules here; people come as they are. I am bringing Debbie because I trust, respect and love who she is and what she stands for. She is an amazing teacher with a ton of knowledge and experience. I know I will gain tools from Debbie to lead future trainings and grow my studio.”

Mandy Roush feels the same way. “Debbie is a tremendous human being! It was a no-brainer to bring her to our studio; I am honored to have her offer this training,” says Roush, owner of Root Down Yoga, which opened at 1217 Calendonia St. in La Crosse, Wis., in November of 2011.
