UW-Stevens Point: Student wins scholarship to travel to China

A University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point student from Plover has won a scholarship to study and intern in China this summer.

Mai Xee Thao, a senior international business and marketing major with a minor in economics, was chosen for a $3,000 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, the award prepares U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy.

Thao recently left for the six-week trip to Tianjin, China, where she will take a language course and serve a business internship with a group of students led by School of Business and Economics Professor Gary Mullins.

A 2008 graduate of Stevens Point Area Senior High School, Thao is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and the Hmong and Southeast Asian-American Club at UW-Stevens Point. She is a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters and Make a Difference Day.
