UW-Stevens Point: Free lecture examines community/student website collaboration

Area nonprofit organizations often lack the time and expertise to create websites and use social media in ways that support their mission. Students at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point are helping make this possible through a collaborative effort between the community and the Department of Computing and New Media Technologies.

Tim Krause, assistant professor of computing and new media technologies, will discuss how website collaboration is assisting area nonprofits and providing students real world experience in the fifth presentation of the UW-Stevens Point College of Letters and Science 2011-2012 Community Lecture Series.

The presentation, “Removing Classroom Walls: University-Community Partnerships,” will be offered free to the public on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Pinery Room at the Portage County Library, 1001 Main St., Stevens Point.

“Students often feel that the university classroom is something other than the real world,” said Krause. “Partnering with nonprofit organizations in Central Wisconsin provides students an opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to problems and needs of real organizations.”

Krause received his doctorate in English from Purdue University. He teaches courses in Web design and information systems, in addition to leading efforts with community partners. His research areas include using simulation to teach project management in professional writing classrooms and facilitating teamwork with six sigma and Web-based technology.
