UW-Madison: WID event explores future of the university

What will the university of 2112 look like? Will we have a physical campus? A formal faculty? How will research be funded? Will students learn differently?

On Monday, Oct. 29 and Tuesday, Oct. 30, a group of future-oriented thinkers will explore these questions at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery (WID) Counterfactual Campus kickoff event.

Based on “counterfactual thinking,” or the tendency to reflect upon “what if” scenarios, researchers, artists, journalists and business experts will lead public discussions about what’s of enduring value in our institutions as well as what needs to be changed in years to come.

Participants include WID Director David Krakauer, Emmy Award-winning CBS Travel Editor Peter Greenberg, University of Michigan researcher Scott Page, cartoonist Lynda Barry, UW Foundation President Mike Knetter, UW School of Business Dean François Ortalo-Magné, Executive Director of the Kellogg Innovation Network Robert Wolcott, WID researcher Constance Steinkuehler and “To the Best of Our Knowledge” Co-Founder and Interviewer Anne Strainchamps and Executive Producer and Interviewer Steve Paulson.

The event will take place between 1:30 and 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29 and between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery building, 330 N. Orchard St.

Media are invited to record the kickoff event.

Krakauer and event participants will be available to answer questions. Nearby parking is available in lots 17 and 20, which are accessible from Randall Avenue and University Avenue, respectively.
