Rogers Memorial Hospital: Addiction specialist joins team at Rogers Memorial Hospital

(Oconomowoc, WI) Rogers Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce that Ian R. Powell, M.D., joined its physician team on October 15. Dr. Powell, who specializes in addiction medicine, will serve as consultant on complex inpatient chemical dependency detoxification cases and for addiction patients in the partial hospitalization programs (PHP or day treatment) at Rogers’ Milwaukee (West Allis) location. Dr. Powell will also be the attending physician for addiction patients in the intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for chemical dependency at the Milwaukee campus. As a member of the addiction medicine section of the Rogers medical staff, he will also provide coverage for other addiction physicians at Rogers’ Oconomowoc campus, including IOP program patients and detox patients in the adult inpatient program and weekend coverage for patients in the Herrington Recovery Center.

A graduate of the Medical College of Ohio (University of Toledo Medical Center), Dr. Powell has extensive training in internal medicine and addiction medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in general internal medicine (GIM) with an emphasis on addiction medicine at the Department of Medicine, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison. He has maintained board certifications in both internal medicine and addiction medicine.

“I am passionate about helping my patients detox safely,” Dr. Powell said. “My background in internal medicine augments my knowledge in addiction medicine, and the combined disciplines help me provide safe detoxification procedures and recovery medications.” He explained that his starting point at Rogers will be to help ensure a well managed, safe detoxification program and to support his physician colleagues at the West Allis campus so that patients can be prepared for long-term recovery.

A member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, Dr. Powell brings extensive experience to his new position. Most recently, he served as medical director at Meriter Hospital/NewStart Alcohol & Drug Treatment Programs, where he was responsible for administrative, inpatient and outpatient duties. In his career, he also worked as an internist for the University of Wisconsin Medical Foundation Immediate Care Clinic and for the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics General Internal Medicine Clinic. Dr. Powell also served as a staff addictionologist with Madison Health Services, Madison’s first methadone maintenance treatment clinic.

“I have known Dr. Powell for about 15 years,” Michael M. Miller, M.D., the medical director of Rogers’ Herrington Recovery Center said. “I first met him when he arrived in Madison after medical school, where he had developed an interest in addiction medicine. He sought me out as a mentor, and later I was his clinical faculty during his fellowship year. Dr. Powell is a strong advocate for his patients and will strengthen our medical staff. He was my partner for several years at Meriter Hospital, and I am delighted he will be my colleague again.” Both Dr. Miller and Dr. Powell were recently named among the “Top Doctors in Madison” by Madison Magazine.

In addition to the recent Madison Magazine award, Dr. Powell was named a “Top Doc” by Madison Magazine in 2004, 2006 and 2010 for alcohol and drug treatment.
