MADISON, WI – Citing the need for local and regional transmission reliability and affordability, the Public Service Commission today voted to grant preliminary approval for a roughly 48-mile, 345 kilovolt (kV) transmission line from Alma to Holmen.

Commission Chairperson Phil Montgomery and Commissioners Eric Callisto and Ellen Nowak unanimously agreed regional benefits coupled with local need merited construction of the project when deciding to issue a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN).

The commissioners also agreed unanimously on a route. Ultimately, the line will cross the Mississippi River west of Alma, proceed through Galesville, and end at the Briggs Road Substation site west of Holmen.

The total approved cost of the project will be about $202 million; however, because of slight modifications to the route requested by the commissioners a firm number will now be calculated by the applicants and submitted to the commission for consideration at its May 30, 2012 meeting when the order for the project is finalized.
