Presents Program Encouraging Employers To Learn About, Adapt To Veterans’ Needs

On Tuesday, February 21, the Metro Milwaukee Society of Human Resource Management, along with the Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board, will present a seminar for employers wishing to learn more about opportunities to improve their workforce by hiring veterans.

The event, which will take place at the Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board (2338 N. 27th Street, Milwaukee, WI 53120), begins at 7:30 a.m. and concludes at 10:30 a.m. A continental breakfast is included in the $45 registration fee.

As more of our Veterans return home, the program promotes the opportunity to source and hire experienced, dedicated individuals for Milwaukee area organizations. The program focuses on understanding the “how-to” of hiring Veterans, sourcing options, and understand how military experience can add value to organizations.

Participants will learn, first-hand, from a panel of experts who will provide specific knowledge about Veteran Workforce Strategies. The program begins with a keynote address from Don Sykes, Chief Executive Officer of the Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board, an agency whose vision is to develop a strategic and coordinated demand-driven workforce development system that is connected to bolstering the economic strength of key industry sectors and economic clusters.

Panelists include: Brigadier General (Retired) Robert Cocroft. General Cocroft has spent much of his career working on behalf of Veterans and is CEO of a non-profit whose mission is to serve Veterans in transition. He was a member of the original Wisconsin Veterans War Memorial Board of Trustees and a Deputy Secretary of the State of Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs. Other panelist include Erik Charles Jaskolski, a U.S. Army and Army Reserve Veteran, who will speak to the real-world challenges he faced as a Veteran seeking employment and will also dispel some of the myths regarding Veterans in the workplace and David Karst is the Vice President of Human Resources for BuySeasons, which hired more than 1,700 workers last year – including many veterans.

Program goals include an understanding of why hiring Veterans is a good value proposition for your organization; why businesses should be interested in military-specific talent management strategies; how skills can be transferred from military experience to the workplace; how to address certain myths and resistance against military candidates; and a review of incentives for hiring Veterans and for complying with various contract compliance measures.
