Rally to call for passage of iron mining legislation

[HURLEY, WI] Residents throughout Iron and Ashland Counties will be gathering at the Montreal (Iron County) City Hall tomorrow for a grassroots rally in support of proposed iron mining legislation and to encourage Gogebic Taconite to continue its efforts to develop an iron ore mine near the Iron County community of Mellen. The rally will begin at noon.

Leaders with the Iron County Development Zone say residents are frustrated that lawmakers have been unable to pass an iron mining bill. They urge legislators to approve the proposed legislation before the current session ends later next week.

“The legislature has less than a week left in the current session and lawmakers need to act quickly and pass this iron mining bill,” said Kelly Klein with the Iron County Development Zone. “We need the jobs and economic benefits from the proposed Gogebic Taconite mine. Too often the voices of Northwoods residents aren’t heard in Madison. This rally is an opportunity for residents to show their support and get the message out that mining is important to our area.”
