Hoffman shares building project essentials

(Appleton, WI) For business owners, a successful building project starts with understanding how the process works. Terry Ellenbecker of Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction, Inc. in Appleton says there are three key elements that must work together for a project to be successful. “Planning, design and construction are critical,” Ellenbecker stated. “Having a basic understanding of these areas can help position you and your team for a successful project.”

Ellenbecker says having a grasp of the commercial construction process can help a business answer some important questions. “As a company considers questions like where to build, how much room will be needed, what building firm should be used and when should they be hired, understanding how the process works can put a business at an advantage,” Ellenbecker said. “It ensures that good decisions are made from the very beginning.”

When considering the planning, design and construction of a building project, Ellenbecker suggests the following:

Planning- Having a solid plan for a new facility is essential to the success of the entire project. An organization should consider and identify all the issues such as space planning, operations, sustainability goals and budget constraints. Bringing the company’s stakeholders together to determine the goals of the new building is an important process to put a business on the right track for the rest of the project.

Design- An important element of this phase is the inclusion of construction professionals. Working collaboratively with the entire project team, they can provide valuable input on the building’s design in regards to constructability, material selection, industry trends, schedule impact, sustainability, and adherence to the project budget. Their involvement can address and eliminate issues before construction begins, helping to lower total project costs.

Construction- This is the time where the construction manager will play an important role in keeping a business owner informed. Gathering subcontractor bids, qualifying those bids, and making subcontractor selections are critical to the success of the project. Having a dedicated project manager on site daily allows them to coordinate and monitor all construction activity on behalf of the company. They will ensure that standards for schedule, safety, quality, and sustainability are being met.

“Overall, the planning, design, and construction of a new building should meet the company’s initial goals,” Ellenbecker said. “With the right planning and a consistent project team, a business will be on track to create a facility that meets those objectives and positions the company for success.”
