Milwaukee Historic Building Restoration Company Earns “Green Professional” Designation

Spray-O-Bond is the first Wisconsin building restoration firm to earn Green Professional status under the WI Sustainable Business Council’s Green Masters Program. As a Green Professional, Spray-O-Bond has performed actions in each of nine “sustainability areas”, and has earned more than 100 points.

“It’s great to see Spray-O-Bond participate in the Green Masters Program,” says Tom Eggert, Executive Director of the WI Sustainable Business Council. Spray-o-bond, an industry leader for building restoration headquartered in Milwaukee, has made great progress within the waste management, workforce, and water aspects of sustainability. “Spray-O-Bond has a rich history in Milwaukee and since their inception in 1926 they’ve become a business leader. Their integration of sustainable practices into their business plan has given way to even more successes for their employees and the environment.”

While historic building restoration by definition may be the purest form of sustainability in the construction field, Spray-o-bond continues to forge ahead with a recycling program and a commitment to local sourcing. During their recent restoration of Daniel Burnham’s historic 735 N. Water Building, they removed over 288 tons of deficient masonry and 60 tons of corroded steel. All this material and 100% of the jobsite construction debris found its way to the appropriate recycling end user. The masonry was crushed and used for new roadway in Milwaukee and the steel was shredded and sent back to a local steel mill for cast forging material.

“Saving the environment, for us, has a direct correlation to saving money. We have gone from 70-75 twenty yard dump boxes per year to 1. The savings is rewarding as we can see the material being reused. We want to be known for our huge handprint on the fabric of historic buildings while at the same time having a very small footprint,” says Robert Forrer, Spray-O-Bond President.

The Green Professional designation is the second highest tier in the Green Masters Program established by the Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council. Candidates are judged on a comprehensive range of sustainability issues from energy and natural resource use to education outreach and purchasing. Over 90 Wisconsin businesses have participated in the program where the top twenty percent achieve the highest “Green Master” designation.
