Gov. Walker: Participates in Columbia energy center groundbreaking

Project will employ 600 Wisconsinites at its peak

Madison—Today Governor Walker participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for an emissions control project at the Columbia Energy Center. The project will put hundreds of Wisconsinites to work and help protect the environment.

“At its peak this project will put 600 Wisconsinites to work,” said Governor Walker. “On average over the course of the three year project 300-400 people will be working on the construction. As an added bonus, not only does will this project employ hundreds, but it will also help protect the environment.”

The total cost of the Columbia Energy Center environmental upgrade is projected to be about $625 million. As a result of the upgrade mercury and sulfur dioxide emissions will be reduced by 90 percent. The upgrade will also benefit other parts of Wisconsin’s economy. Wisconsin contractors and suppliers will be providing materials and products for the project. For example, Merrill Iron and Steel in Schofield will be a major supplier of structural steel.
