-Keep unwanted guests out of your home or business this winter with these helpful tips

NEW BERLIN, WI- October 26, 2012- Wisconsin winters are known to be cold and brutal, sending people indoors seeking warmth and relief from the conditions. While boxelder bugs and Asian lady beetles congregate on the sides of buildings during fall looking for shelter, there are also other unwanted guests that can make their way into your home or business to find refuge for winter.

The main pests to worry about during the winter months are cockroaches and rodents. Cockroaches are sensitive to minor temperature changes, and will move into your home or business at the first sign of dropping temperatures. Rodents such as mice and rats can enter buildings in search of food, water, and shelter. Dave Kusnierek, Area Service Manager and Associate Certified Entomologist at Batzner Pest Management noted, “A mouse only needs a quarter of an inch sized gap to enter your home or building.” He also warned, “Place any bird feeders away from the home since the fallen seed becomes an excellent food source for mice.”

Most people do not know about an infestation until signs become evident, at which point it might be too late to control the problem. The best way to prevent a winter pest infestation is to take necessary precautions during the months leading up to winter.

Here is a list of tips to keep unwanted winter pests out of your home or business:

Tightly seal all entry points: Entry points for pests include door and window screens, around pipes, crevices or gaps in siding, and cracks. Rats can squeeze through quarter-sized openings, while mice can fit through a hole about the size of a dime. Make sure these points are sealed properly to avoid pest entry.
Trim branches, bushes, and plants: Pests can use these areas to come indoors.
Keep bird feeders away from your home: As stated above, mice use the fallen bird seed as a food source, and it could lure them inside your home.
Keep firewood and mulch away from your home: Cockroaches and ants can nest in firewood and moisture-rich habitats like mulch. Make sure you store any firewood away from your home and inspect it before bringing it indoors. Mulch and firewood should be kept at least two feet away from your home.
Practice good sanitation: Cockroaches, mice and rats live in filth, so keeping a clean environment can help to keep pests at bay. Ensure that counters and dishes are kept clean, and seal any leftover food. Garbage bins must be emptied and kept clean to avoid attracting any of these pests.

If you are experiencing an infestation, please call a professional pest management company immediately. Batzner Pest Management has an effective Rodent Management & Exclusion program precisely designed to help control these pest infestations. A Batzner professional will conduct a client interview and a thorough inspection in which they look for signs of infestation and inspect for openings/entry points. Next, they will identify the type of pest, determine the method of treatment, and perform the treatment. Finally, a professional will make sanitation and property repair recommendations.
