Arts Wisconsin: Announces the recipients of the 2012 Arts in the Community Awards

In partnership with the League of Wisconsin Municipalities, made possible with generous support from Bailey Edward architects

WISCONSIN DELLS, WI-Arts Wisconsin, Wisconsin’s statewide arts service, advocacy, and development organization, today presented its fourth annual Arts in the Community Awards at a ceremony during the League of Wisconsin Municipalities’ 114th annual conference at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells, WI.

These awards, presented by Arts Wisconsin in partnership with the League of Wisconsin Municipalities, honor local officials and civic leaders around the state who have championed the arts as integral to economic, educational and community vitality and demonstrate exemplary advocacy, support, volunteerism, and philanthropy on behalf of the arts on the local level. Award winners for 2012 were selected by a panel of civic leaders from a highly competitive statewide pool of nominees.

The 2012 Arts in the Community Awards are made possible with the generous support of Bailey Edward, an award-winning architectural firm based in Rhinelander, WI; Chelsea, MI; and Chicago and Champaign, IL.

The 2012 Arts in the Community award winners are:

Anastasia Shartin, Visual Arts Director, and the Phipps Center for the Arts, Hudson, WI. In the past 10 years the Phipps, with Anastasia’s leadership, has utilized regional visual artists, community organizers, environmental groups, university and local officials to help clarify and address the accelerated changes that have materialized in the St. Croix Valley area. Anastasia and the Phipps Center have played a critical role in developing and advancing What We Need is Here (the title of a poem by writer Wendell Berry), a program that rallies issues and actions for organizations that address issues significant to the St. Croix Valley, such as the watershed and land use, changing rural landscape, developing social capital, and building community through the arts.

Marlene Doerr Kreilkamp, Founder and Director, and SHARP Literacy, Milwaukee, WI. SHARP Literacy, Inc. energizes urban schoolchildren to become confident, capable readers, writers and researchers, using the visual arts as a tool to engage young minds and reinforce learning. The goal of the SHARP program is to use the power of art to inspire critical thinking skills, thereby helping children explore and retain key vocabulary words and concepts in science, social studies, and language arts. SHARP has served over 70,000 students from first through fifth grade in public, private, parochial, choice, and charter schools, many in Milwaukee’s inner city and near south side neighborhoods.
