First annual August 4th bike, run and walk event will take place near Lake Wingra

MADISON, Wis. – July 17, 2012 – The Alliant Energy Veterans’ Alliance and the First Weber Group Foundation, along with over a dozen other generous sponsors, are putting on the first annual Lake Ride 2012 on Saturday, August 4 in Madison to raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project, a non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors of the United States Armed Forces.

“The Alliant Energy Veterans’ Alliance is working on an ongoing basis to recruit veterans to work at Alliant Energy and provide resources to them as they transition to working here,” said Dan Checki, Alliant Energy Director of Fossil Fuel Procurement and Veteran Alliance Steering Team Member.

“However, we came up with the idea to expand our efforts to assist veterans on a larger scale and felt that raising funds for the Wounded Warrior Project was a great way to provide support.”

Lake Ride 2012 offers three fun ways to support the Wounded Warrior Project. Participants can do a 9-mile bike ride around Lake Wingra, a 3-mile run, or a 3-mile walk along its shoreline. Check-in for the event starts at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 4. The bike ride kicks off at 10:00 a.m., with the run beginning at 10:15 a.m. and the walk at 10:30 a.m. The event will begin and end at Lucky’s Bar and Grille, 1421 Regent Street in Madison.

Prior to the start of the bike ride, Adam Widner, a representative of the Wounded Warrior Project, will speak to those in attendance about his military service and the support he received from the non-profit support group. Widner suffered spinal cord, shoulder, and ankle injuries in Afghanistan in the summer of 2008 while traveling in the gunner’s turret of a HUMVEE.

To register for Lake Ride 2012, send an email to kasiatinder@alliantenergy.com to obtain your sponsorship form and a map of the bike, run and walk routes. More details on the event are also available by calling Kasia Tinder at (608) 458-3856. Participants that raise $50 or more will receive an event shirt and a free lunch at Lucky’s after the event. A limited number of bikes will be available from Budget Bicycle Center for those that want to participate but don’t have access to a bicycle. Cronometro will be putting up a service tent at Lucky’s to check tires and provide other bike services.

The First Weber Group Foundation has worked with the Wounded Warrior Project previously, and along with Alliant Energy, is a strong supporter of our veterans and active duty armed forces.
