Assembly Democrats unveil legislation that restores access for families
Madison – Today, members of the Women’s Health Workgroup (Assembly Democrats) circulated three women’s health bills that highlight the need to restore access for families.
“Last session we made great strides toward helping women and men have better access to quality reproductive health care,” said Assistant Minority Leader Donna Seidel (D – Wausau). “Right now, in a difficult economy, the need for these services is even greater. Yet part of Republicans’ relentless attack on the middle class in our state has been repealing past progress and moving Wisconsin backward. Working families are paying attention to who is fighting for them and who is making their lives more difficult and uncertain. We want them to know that Democrats will keep fighting to make sure they get the health care they need and deserve for them and their families.”
Rep. Chris Sinicki (D-Milwaukee) circulated a resolution naming October as Women’s Health Month.
“We are proclaiming October as Women’s Health Month because women’s health care is an important investment for our families,” said Rep. Sinicki. “It saves taxpayers money and improves the health of families statewide.”
Rep. Chris Taylor (D-Madison) introduced Healthy Women, Healthy Families Part I that restores funding to health care providers that serve communities across the state.
“This bill restores Wisconsin’s successful family planning program which has received bipartisan support for more than three decades,” said Rep. Taylor. “It is imperative that we make sure women and families have access to critical health care such as breast and cervical cancer screenings, well women exams, and access to birth control. When women are healthy, their families are healthy.”
Rep. Kelda Roys (D-Madison) introduced Healthy Women, Healthy Families Part II that restores the Family Planning Waiver to 2010 levels to reinstate access for low-income families.
“Governor Walker has focused on tax breaks and giveaways for special interests while devastating access to health care and family planning services for women and their families,” said Rep. Roys. “The Family Planning Waiver must be restored to ensure that families in need have the access they deserve.”
