MADISON–Beginning Monday, November 14, the State Capitol will play host to a display of photography from the Penokee Hills by Northern Wisconsin artists. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held in the First Floor Rotunda 5:00-5:45 p.m. on Monday.

The “Precious Waters of the Penokees” exhibit aims to highlight the pristine waters and unspoiled beauty of the areas in the Penokee Hills that would fall within Gogebic Taconite’s proposed open-pit iron mine. Speakers from the Chequamegon Bay Area will discuss the special nature of the Penokees and potential impacts of a mine. The reception will be followed by a social hour at Brocach Irish Pub (7 W Main St.). The event is free and all are welcome.

This exhibit is especially timely given that the Senate Select Committee on Mining Jobs will be holding a hearing on metallic mining in Wisconsin on Tuesday, November 15. Legislators have been invited to attend the photography exhibit opening to help inform their discussion of the issue.

The exhibit is sponsored by the Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice and will continue in place through Friday, November 18. For more information, contact WNPJ at (608) 250-9240 or carl@wnpj.org, or visit http://www.wnpj.org.
