National Work Zone Memorial on display for the week in the Atrium

In commemoration of Work Zone Safety Week in Wisconsin, April 11 – 12, 2011, the National Work Zone Memorial will be on display in the Atrium at Lambeau Field starting Tuesday, April 12. In observance of the event, Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb will be joined by Winnebago County Highway Commissioner John Haese, Tim Michels of Michels Corporation, and Frank Swartz of Crowley Construction, will comment on how crashes in work zones have affected their lives and the lives of their co-workers.

WHERE: Atrium, Lambeau Field, 1265 Lombardi Avenue, Green Bay

The 20-foot long National Work Zone Memorial contains the names of some 1400 people who have been killed in work zones over the years, including the names of eight Wisconsin construction and county workers killed while on the job. Crowley Construction’s Frank Swartz was present when his co-worker, Peter Messerlie was struck and killed by a drunken driver and will relate his story. Winnebago County Highway Commissioner John Haese will talk about two of his workers killed while doing maintenance on Highway 41. Tim Michels of Michels Corporation will share his experience in dealing with tragedies to workers in work zones.
