Issues include education, expanding blender pumps

MILWAUKEE – Founding members of the Wisconsin Bio Industry Alliance (WBIA) were in Washington, DC early this week to meet with the Wisconsin Congressional delegation about issues related to ethanol.

Discussions on key issues involved educating members of Congress about the environmental and, particularly, economic benefits of ethanol for Wisconsin, as well as efforts to increase the availability of blender pumps, which allow consumers to select the blend of ethanol they prefer up to E85.

“The ethanol industry remains a driving force in Wisconsin’s economy, and expanding its production and usage is a key way we can grow our state economy,” said Joshua Morby, Executive Director of the WBIA. “Increasing blender pumps is a great way to take advantage of the opportunities that exist in the bio fuel industry, while giving consumers a greater choice in determining the blend of fuel that best suits their needs.”

General Motors has said it expects to have half its fleet capable of running on E85 by next year, but availability of E85 would need to increase dramatically in order for all consumers to take advantage. GM has said that there would need to be at least 12,000 stations offering the fuel for all consumers to have access.

Currently, there are only approximately 2,300 stations that offer E85 across the country, with 122 of those locations located in Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Bio Industry Alliance is a diverse group of businesses, environmental groups and statewide and local organizations that have come together to build both public and legislative awareness of the Bio Industry in Wisconsin.
