Wisconsin Academy: To host three Academy Evening discussions in Milwaukee that explore Wisconsin art and history

MADISON—The Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters will present a series of three exciting talks this fall in Milwaukee celebrating Wisconsin art and artists and Wisconsin labor history. The following talks, part of the Wisconsin Academy’s free statewide Academy Evenings discussion series, are held in partnership with Milwaukee arts and educational organizations and open to the public:

Milwaukee Labor History: Struggle, Strikes, and Survival with Michael Gordon

Friday, September 23, 5:30 pm at the Northwestern Mutual Art Gallery, Cardinal Stritch University, 6801 N. Yates Rd.

In his Academy Evening, entitled Milwaukee Labor History: Struggle, Strikes, and Survival, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee emeritus professor of history Michael Gordon discusses three eras in Milwaukee labor history, including the Patrick Cudahy Meat Packing Strike of 1987–1989. Held in partnership with Cardinal Stritch University, this Academy Evenings discussion is free and open to the public. The event also heralds the Milwaukee opening of the James Watrous Gallery touring photography exhibition, WISCONSIN LABOR: A CONTEMPORARY PORTRAIT. Come to the gallery early (beginning at 5:00 pm) to see the exhibition, which features the work of two Milwaukee photographers, Tim Abler and Dick Blau. The WISCONSIN LABOR exhibition, on view through November 6, 2011, was organized by the Wisconsin Academy’s James Watrous Gallery in Madison and sponsored by the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional support from Reinhart Boerner van Deuren, s.c.

Space and Place, a conversation with Martha Glowacki and Carol Emmons

Thursday, October 6, at 7:00 pm, at the Charles Allis Museum, 1801 N Prospect Ave.

Space and Place features a conversation between visual artists Martha Glowacki (Madison) and Carol Emmons (Green Bay), whose work is currently on view as part of the Charles Allis Museum’s centenary celebration. The director of the Wisconsin Academy’s James Watrous Gallery, Martha Glowacki is also a sculptor who explores the human understanding of the natural world through two areas of inquiry: the history of science and scientific illustration. Carol Emmons is an internationally acclaimed installation artist specializing in large-scale, site-specific works. She is currently Frankenthal Professor in the Arts and Visual Design at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay. Presented in partnership with the Charles Allis Museum, this Academy Evenings conversation is free and open to the public.

The Anatomy of Book Art: With/Without Appendix, a conversation with JoAnna Poehlmann and Barbara Brown Lee

Thursday, November 17, at 6:15 pm in the Lubar Auditorium the Milwaukee Art Museum, 700 N. Art Museum Drive

Visual artist JoAnna Poehlmann and Milwaukee Art Museum chief educator Barbara Brown Lee, both Wisconsin Academy Fellows, engage in a lively discussion entitled, The Anatomy of Book Art: With/Without Appendix at the Milwaukee Art Museum. JoAnna Poehlmann’s work, represented in major museum and library collections worldwide, is a rare combination of superb draftsmanship, meticulous observation, and droll humor; her drawings, collages, and artist books are infused with her appreciation of art, literature, and the natural world. Barbara Brown Lee has been a fixture at the Milwaukee Art Museum for over forty years, leading gallery talks, directing docent programs, and training volunteers. This Academy Evenings conversation is held in partnership with the Milwaukee Art Museum and is free to both museum and Wisconsin Academy members with proof of membership. Non-members must pay museum admission to attend this event.
