A chilly Earth Week has been capped off with word of UW-Stevens Point’s inclusion in the Princeton Review’s listing of America’s Green Colleges for 2011, the university announced today.
A total of 311 out of 703 schools judged made the nationwide list. Other Wisconsin universities included this year are UW-Milwaukee, UW-Eau Claire and UW Oshkosh. The 311 selected schools received scores in the 80th or higher percentile. The Princeton Review does not rank the schools hierarchically (1 to 311) according to their Green Rating scores.
UW-Stevens Point was recognized for its new Operations and Waste Management Facility—the first of its kind at a Wisconsin university that will feature a pilot wastewater treatment plant, a composting lab, a microbiology lab and an adjoined recycling center.
Also noted was the university’s compost tea harvesting machine as well as vermi-composting, where worms do the work. UWSP also demonstrates examples of how students, faculty, staff and the public can live in environmentally friendly and affordable ways with Knutzen and Pray Sims Halls, which feature a solar-paneled roof. UWSP’s career services helps green-minded students find green-thinking jobs. That comes in handy considering that UW-Stevens Point’s Student Government Association is the only such organization in the UW System to have an Environmental and Sustainability Issues Director and Environmental and Sustainability Issues Committee.
