UW-Stevens Point: Development director named for UW-Stevens Point Letters and Science

Julie Smith of Marshfield has been named as the development director for the College of Letters and Science at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. She began her new role October 3. Smith replaces Mark Williams, who has taken a different position within the college.

“We’re very pleased to welcome Julie as part of our advancement team,” said Interim Vice Chancellor of University Advancement Kathy Buenger. “She brings a solid background of experience and success in fundraising with her. As we begin to put our strategic plan into action, this is a pivotal time for UW-Stevens Point. Julie’s efforts will be instrumental to the continued progress of our work.”

Smith, who received her undergraduate degree from Indiana University with a major in political science and minors in history and anthropology, previously held development positions at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the University of Rochester and Purdue University. She has attended the Big Ten Fundraising Institute and the Indiana University School of Philanthropy.

“Julie comes to UWSP with a manifest history of development work, including extensive experience in higher education in both the East and the Midwest,” noted Chris Cirmo, dean of the College of Letters and Science. “She brings a welcoming attitude regarding our mission as a ‘student-centered’ university, and supports the mission of public education. We are indeed fortunate to have her on our staff.”

“I am delighted to be representing the College of Letters and Science as a member of the UW-Stevens Point advancement team. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to assist my talented colleagues in making UWSP goals and aspirations a reality,” said Smith.

Development efforts at UW-Stevens Point continue to thrive. Gifts to the UWSP Foundation totaled nearly $1.7 million last year. As a result, alumni and friends of the university were able to provide almost $1.5 million for student scholarships and academic program enhancements. Assets held by the UWSP Foundation currently total more than $20 million.
