UW Madison: Wall Street economist to speak on campus

MADISON – University of Wisconsin-Madison alumnus Stephen S. Roach, Ph.D, one of Wall Street’s most influential economists, will visit campus this week to address the topic of “Pitfalls in a Post-Crisis World: Moment of Truth for Global Rebalancing.”

Roach will speak on Thursday, Oct. 13, from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. in Room 6210 of the Sewell Social Science Building, 1180 Observatory Drive. His talk will be open to the public.

Roach has spent most of his career as chief economist for Morgan Stanley and more recently as chairman of the firm’s Asian businesses, including a three-year stint in Hong Kong. He is a prolific writer and communicator on the global economy.

The Wisconsin Alumni Association honored Roach with a Distinguished Alumni Award last March. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from the UW-Madison in 1968 and his master’s degree and Ph.D. in economics from New York University.

Roach is a current member of the Economics Department Advisory Board, a senior executive with Morgan Stanley, and a senior fellow and senior lecturer at Yale University’s School of Management and its Jackson Institute for Global Affairs. Last fall he launched his first course on the Chinese economy, called The Next China.

The event is being sponsored by the Economics Student Association and the Department of Economics.
