MADISON – University of Wisconsin-Madison Provost Paul M. DeLuca Jr. has announced five finalists who are being considered for the position of chief information officer (CIO) and vice provost for information technology at the university.

A 17-member search and screen committee, chaired by engineering physics professor Jake Blanchard, recommended the finalists to DeLuca.

To select a new CIO, all five candidates will participate in an extensive set of meetings and presentations on the campus in which they will interact with various groups from the UW community.

The finalists are:

– Joshua Riedy, CIO of the University of North Dakota-Grand Forks will present on Tuesday, April 26.

– Bruce Maas, CIO of UW-Milwaukee, Thursday, May 5.

– Joanne Berg, vice provost for enrollment management and interim CIO at UW-Madison, Tuesday, May 10.

– Sasi Pillay, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Thursday, May 12.

– Marilu Goodyear, department head, Department of Public Administration, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Thursday, May 19.

As part of the visit, each candidate will conduct a public 30-minute presentation and hold a 30-45 minute question-and-answer session. All public presentations are currently scheduled from 9:30-10:45 a.m. on the dates noted, with locations still to be determined.

Complete details of the public presentations will be announced in coming weeks. Other campus groups will be notified directly of their meetings with the candidates.

UW-Madison’s next CIO will be responsible for advancing the technology aspects of numerous important campus initiatives, including the IT Strategic Plan and research computing. The IT Strategic Plan is a campus-wide effort that is addressing specific ways to advance the research, teaching and outreach mission of the UW-Madison.

The CIO must be able to marshal resources both within and outside of the Division of Information Technology (DoIT), to help improve IT services across campus. DoIT, with a central staff of 650, also reports to the CIO through its chief operating officer.

The individual chosen will become just the third Madison campus CIO, succeeding Ron Kraemer, who took a similar position at Notre Dame in August, 2010. Berg has served as interim CIO since then.
