University of Phoenix: Milwaukee campus supports childhood education with computer donation to Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee

Donation of more than 75 computers gives local children tools to help them learn

MILWAUKEE, October 19, 2011 – University of Phoenix Milwaukee Campusannounced today the donation of more than 75 desktop and laptop computers to Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. This donation will allow the Clubs to upgrade existing computer labs and provide access to current technology for the children it serves.

“Computers and technology play an important role in educating our children and, in particular, improving literacy skills,” said James Clark, President & CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. “We’re grateful for the generosity of University of Phoenix Milwaukee Campus in supplying computers to give kids in our area access to tools that will help them learn.”

Through the donation, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee will update equipment in the existing computer labs and at its Camp Whitcomb/Mason location in Hartland, as well as in its more than 30 locations within Milwaukee Public Schools. This effort is a continuation of University of Phoenix’s ongoing commitment to the Boys & Girls Clubs. In August, University of Phoenix Milwaukee Campus donated $5,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs as part of a $50,000 regional donation drive across all the University’s Midwestern campuses to promote childhood literacy.

According to research from the National Center for Education Statistics, in 2003, 22 percent of Americans aged 16 and older ranked as having below basic literacy, meaning they possessed the most simple literacy skills. Thirteen percent were categorized as above proficient, meaning they had the skills to perform complex and challenging literacy activities. The donated computers from University of Phoenix will help the next generation achieve higher literacy and technological proficiency.

“Access to technology is an important step on the road to a life of education and achievement,” said Dave Steffen, campus director for University of Phoenix Milwaukee Campus. “We’re thrilled to continue to support the Boys & Girls Clubs and its efforts to promote that access for children in Milwaukee.”
