Friesland, WI — November 21, 2011 — Larry Alsum, Owner of Alsum Farms & Produce Inc., isn’t easily surprised. But he was on October 22, 2011 when Jim Scheuerman, Food Resource Manager for Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin, presented him with a plaque for his efforts on behalf of Second Harvest. The plaque was presented to Larry at the October 22 groundbreaking ceremony celebrating the first steps of Alsum’s multi-phase expansion project.
The Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending hunger in southwestern Wisconsin. Through food and financial donations and volunteer support, the organization distributes more than 8.6 million pounds of food each year to nearly 141,000 people in 16 counties.
For the past several years, Alsum Farms & Produce Inc. has donated fresh produce to the Second Harvest Foodbank throughout the year. “I wanted to do more,” notes Larry. “The economy has affected the everyday lives of thousands of families in our region. Second Harvest is a great organization — helping families put healthy food on their tables. By donating fresh produce we can help make each day a little better.” In fiscal year 2011, Alsum Farms & Produce has donated 302,306 meals to Second Harvest.
Alsum currently serves on Second Harvest’s eight-member Food Resource Advisory Committee assisting the organization in developing new ideas for sourcing food donations.
