Significant health insurance loss likely in every county of state if proposed plan goes through

Madison, WI — In a letter to state legislators today, the Save BadgerCare Coalition called for every legislator to hold hearings in their districts on proposed BadgerCare cuts that could throw many off their health insurance and reduce coverage for others. The letter is available at www.wispolitics.com/1006/101111_Save_BadgerCare.pdf and includes a map that displays how many citizens are currently served by BadgerCare in each of our state’s counties.

“When you’re proposing to throw so many people off their health insurance, you need to have public hearings across the state,” said Doug Hill, Director of Protect Your Care Wisconsin. “We also find it ironic that at the same time the Walker Administration is proposing to throw people off their BadgerCare health insurance, the Administration is also trying to reduce the impact by using a key provision of the federal health insurance reform that it opposes.”

According to the Associated Press, the Walker Administration is asking the federal government for a waiver to force young adults up to age 26 to join their parents’ insurance plans, likely an attempt to minimize the proposal’s impact. Allowing young adults to stay on their parents’ insurance was a key part of the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as health insurance reform. Earlier this year, Gov. Walker authorized Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen to sue to block implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

BadgerCare serves roughly 775,600 citizens in Wisconsin — including over 467,300 children and 19,400 pregnant women.
