Partnership to deliver turnkey hybrid solutions globally

Waukesha, WI – February 28, 2011—Waukesha based Odyne Systems, LLC, is expanding distribution and support of Odyne plug-in hybrid systems for medium and heavy duty trucks beyond the 15 state Dueco, Inc. territory by appointing Terex Utilities as distributor throughout the balance of the U.S. and globally.

Odyne Systems develops and markets turnkey hybrid solutions optimized for fleets that utilize vehicles with driving cycles featuring a high percentage of starting and stopping, along with extended periods of jobsite idle time. Companies operating utility or work vehicles with this profile benefit significantly by using the company’s proprietary parallel plug-in hybrid system.  Odyne’s unique modular system can be installed on a wide variety of new and existing vehicles, reducing fuel consumption by up to 50% depending on application, lowering emissions and eliminating or significantly reducing engine noise at the jobsite.

Sales orders domestically are up substantially in 2011 and the new distribution agreement with Terex is anticipated to significantly expand opportunities. Odyne estimates an addressable market of 250,000 units worldwide per year for new and retrofit work truck hybrid systems. Joe Dalum, President and Chief Executive Officer of Odyne Systems noted “We believe that the work truck industry will be strongly affected by advancements in vehicle efficiency in the coming years and we are excited to be at the leading edge with our products.  Our new distribution agreement with Terex means we will have comprehensive coverage of the North American market and global reach to meet customer needs for lower emission vehicles that consume less fuel and operate quietly. We are looking forward to significant growth opportunities ahead.

Odyne’s plug-in hybrid truck systems increase fuel efficiency while driving by using an electric motor in parallel with the existing drive train, providing launch assist and regenerative braking. Once at the jobsite, vehicles can function without using engine power. Instead, workers use the hybrid plug-in battery system to power worksite applications, including equipment mounted to the truck.  Fleet managers often have preferences for a certain type of chassis, fuel type or vehicle application configuration. The Odyne system can be applied to a wide range of vehicle configurations without any changes to an OEM engine or transmission. The unique system also does not affect the original EPA certification of the engine.   The Odyne plug-in hybrid systems can be used on many work truck platforms, including bucket trucks, digger derricks and air compressor truck applications.

The battery system on the Odyne Plug-in hybrid units will be recharged by three different means:

Plugging In: Plugging in the vehicle to use electric utility grid energy.

Regenerative Braking:  The electric motor generator slows the vehicle and uses ‘captured’ energy to recharge the battery system.

Engine Recharging in the Field: When the battery system is depleted to its maximum allowable level at the jobsite, the engine automatically starts and recharges the system. The engine then turns off.  Truck-mounted equipment continues to operate without interruption during the recharging process.

Lee Jacobson, Vice President of Commercial Operations for Terex Utilities, commented, “We are excited to partner with Odyne Systems to take their unique plug-in hybrid systems to the global market for applications in large work vehicles. When coupled with our other hybrid offerings, Terex now becomes a one-stop shop for customers, with the ability to match the best hybrid system to their needs, optimizing performance. We know the Odyne hybrid system, with its unique plug-in feature, is going to be the preferred solution in many applications.”

Odyne and Terex will partner in a booth at the NTEA Work Truck Show March 8 – 10 in Indianapolis.
