Madison, Wis., July 6, 2011—The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory
(NREL) ranks Madison Gas and Electric’s (MGE) Green Power Tomorrow program 2nd in both green
power sold as a percentage of all electricity sales and customer participation rate among investor-owned
utilities across the country. Green power programs are offered by 850 U.S. utilities.
Nine percent, or more than 11,000 MGE customers, purchase green power and offset all or a portion of
their electricity-generated emissions.
Since 2007, MGE expanded its renewable energy capacity through increasing wind power by 12 times,
contracting methane-generated electricity from a Dane County landfill and purchasing 1,020
megawatt-hours of customer-owned solar power for the local grid. The company has already met its
renewable energy portfolio standard required of all state utilities by 2015.
NREL is the Department of Energy’s primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy
efficiency research and development. NREL is operated by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC.
MGE generates and distributes electricity to 139,000 customers in Dane County, Wis., and purchases
and distributes natural gas to 143,000 customers in seven south-central and western Wisconsin counties.
The company’s roots in the Madison area date back more than 150 years.
