A $100,000 challenge grant will invigorate the Madison Public Library Foundation’s Learning for a Lifetime: The Campaign for A New Central Library.

Eager to match new, private donations dollar for dollar up to $100,000, this anonymous donor and long time library friend hopes to encourage others to give to the Central Library project. The challenge will extend from now until the end of the calendar year.

“I don’t buy books, I use the library. And libraries have been important to me since I was little,” the donor said. An expanded, improved library is important because the Central Library is the “cornerstone of a city’s system,” she said.

The Central Library has truly proved to be an invaluable, widely used resource in Madison. In 2010, it had over a half a million visits and the community was able to check out books, use the internet and utilize the meeting rooms.

Funds from the challenge grant will help the Madison Public Library Foundation reach its $8.5 million fundraising goal for Learning for a Lifetime: The Campaign for a New Central Library. Along with city funds, the private money will create a new community asset, equipped for the digital age.
