Events will Promote Free Preventive Care Benefits Available in the Affordable Care Act

Washington, DC – Seniors, health care providers and partnering organizations representing seniors will be holding round table discussions and press events in eight states across the country over the next week to promote the many free preventive care benefits for seniors available in the Affordable Care Act. These events will not only educate seniors about preventive care opportunities but will also give seniors a chance to take advantage of some of the services.

These events are part of a summer-long public education campaign being launched by the Department of Health and Human Services to ensure that seniors across the country know about the preventive care services that they are entitled to under the Affordable Care Act. The campaign will include education, free materials and on-site health care providers to perform routine tests.

Some of the preventive care benefits include diabetes tests, several cancer screenings, bone mass measurement testing and a wellness visit. As a result of the Affordable Care Act, Medicare now covers many of these services without a cost to patients.

Copies of HHS materials were put in the hands of seniors, left at senior facilities and will be given to partnering organizations to distribute to Medicare beneficiaries in each state. These materials outline the free preventive care benefits and can be ordered and downloaded for free at http://productordering.cms.hhs.gov/.

“Under the Affordable Care Act, seniors have access to a wide array of free preventive care services—and we want to make sure that they know about these services and take full advantage of them,” said Jon Romano spokesperson for Know Your Care. “This is about real people and making sure that they have the best healthcare possible.”

Several groups representing seniors will be participating in activities in 8 states including: CO, FL, MI, NH, NM, NV, OH and WI. Some of these groups include: Boomers Leading Change in Health, Citizen Action of Wisconsin, Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups, Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio, Florida Alliance for Retired Americans, Florida CHAIN, HCAN Ohio, Health Care for America Now, Interfaith Program for Older Adults, Nevada Adult Day Healthcare Centers, Nevada Alliance for Retired Americans, New Hampshire Alliance for Healthcare, New Hampshire Alliance for Retired Americans, Ohio Alliance for Retired American, Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, Progress Michigan, ProgressNow Nevada, Progress Ohio, Pro Seniors, SEIU, UHCAN Ohio, and Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans.
