Family Farm Defenders is pleased to announce two winners of its first annual John Kinsman Beginning Farmer Food Sovereignty Award. It was difficult for the selection committee since nearly a dozen qualified beginning farmers were nominated.

Lindsey Morris Carpenter has been running Grassroots Farm, a 40 member Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) operation near Monroe, WI with her mother, Gale, since 2007. She studied fine arts in Philadelphia, PA before moving back to the Midwest to start raising vegetables, fruit, chickens and pastured pigs.

Daniel and Hannah Miller have operated Easy Yoke Farm near Millville MN as a CSA operation since 2010 and also sell at farmers markets, co-ops, and retail markets. Besides their young children, they also have draft horses to help with farm work.

Both winners will be receiving a cash prize of $2000, plus a fair trade holiday gift basket.

The prize is named in honor of John Kinsman, organic dairy farmer and forester near Lime Ridge, WI, founder and president of Family Farm Defenders, as well as longtime pioneer of sustainable agriculture and outspoken advocate of food sovereignty for decades.
