MADISON – The law firm of DeWitt Ross & Stevens S.C. today announced that the Wisconsin Law Foundation (WLF) will honor its partner, Donald Leo Bach, with the Charles L. Goldberg Distinguished Service Award at the Fellows of the Wisconsin Law Foundation invitation-only dinner celebration on September 27, 2011 in Madison.

The Goldberg Award recognizes the lifetime achievement of an individual in the legal profession with a record of service to the profession and to the public. It is named after the former State Bar president, a leader in launching free legal services to the poor.

Bach has spent more than 35 years practicing law and has a distinguished track record marked by exemplary public service and efforts to improve the legal profession. Bach’s career has included many contributions to state government. He served in a number of capacities while working for the State of Wisconsin including Legal Counsel to Governor Tommy Thompson, Acting Chief of Staff, Pardon Counsel and Chairman of the Governor’s Pardon Advisory Board, Acting Chairman of the Wisconsin Parole Board, Administrator of the Division of Administrative Services in the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, Administrator of the Division of State Agency Services in the Wisconsin Department of Administration and Deputy Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Revenue.

Bach has supported the Wisconsin Bar through his numerous contributions to its committees throughout the years as a leader and supporter, including serving as the Chairman of the State Bar’s Bench-Bar Committee. He also was appointed by the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 2004 to serve on the Wisconsin Judicial Commission, the agency that investigates and enforces judicial ethics and disability matters, and was re-appointed in 2007 and served as Chair of the Commission. In addition, Bach was named by the Governor’s Advisory Council on Judicial Selection as “one of the three best qualified candidates” for appointment to the Supreme Court of Wisconsin.

Bach received his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and practices in Administrative Law and Litigation with the law firm of DeWitt Ross & Stevens and is a retired United States Navy Reserve Captain. In addition to his contributions in government, he has also served as a Member of the Board of Directors for the DeForest Elderly Housing and Owner and Management Corporation, a non-profit, low-income elderly housing organization and is affiliated with the Knights of Columbus (3rd Degree).

The late Charles L. Goldberg, for whom the Distinguished Service Award is named, was a native of Milwaukee and received his law degree from Marquette in 1928. He was past president of the State Bar of Wisconsin and the Milwaukee Bar Association and in 1972 won Marquette University’s Distinguished Law Alumnus Award. Goldberg was named chairman of the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation, where membership is considered a professional honor and evidence of distinction as a lawyer, judge or law teacher. He was also a member of the ABA House of Delegates and ABA’s standing committee on Constitution and Bylaws.
