Extension deadline is October 17

The income tax extension filing deadline is Monday, October 17. State revenue officials are encouraging you to electronically file your tax return to meet the extension deadline.

Taxpayers who filed an extension with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) automatically receive a state extension. When you file your state income tax return, you may attach a copy of the IRS extension to your Wisconsin tax return to show that you filed the extension request. Otherwise, be sure to keep a copy of the IRS’ Federal Extension Form 4868 for your records.

Although an extension allows you more time to file the tax return and helps avoid paying late filing fees, the department must charge 1% interest per month from the April 18, 2011, due date if you owe state taxes. Payments are also due on October 17.

E-filing is the most accurate and secure way to file. The Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR) offers free, secure electronic tax filing from its website at revenue.wi.gov. WI e -file is available 24/7 and the program offers Wisconsin fill-in tax forms that perform the math to help prevent errors when you prepare your tax return.

You will receive an acknowledgement that their tax return has been received, plus any refund can be deposited directly into a savings or checking account. WI e –file is available at revenue.wi.gov by clicking on the Wisconsin e-file logo:
