MADISON — Governor Scott Walker announced today that the Town of Mercer, Iron County, will receive a $ $435,000 grant from the Community Development Block Grant–Public Facilities (CDBG-PF) program of the Department of Commerce (Commerce) to fund downtown enhancement and storm water improvements in the community.

“It is essential for Wisconsin communities to replace aging infrastructure, as well as put their best face forward – for both residents and visitors alike” said Governor Walker. “This improvement project will contribute to the overall health and well being of the community.”

During the 2011 construction season U.S. Hwy 51, going through downtown Mercer, will be reconstructed by the U.S. Department of Transportation. During that time the community will tackle a number of miscellaneous projects including: repairing storm sewers, deteriorated streets, curbs, gutters and sidewalks; installing historic street lights; benches, planters and trash receptacles; constructing sidewalks, pedestrian lanes and paths; and installing bicycle racks and signage. The total project cost is $7,689,723 and is expected to be completed by fall of 2012.

CDBG-PF grants play an important role in helping communities finance a wide range of projects designed to enhance the economic vitality of the community through the provision of community infrastructure, the expansion of tax base, job creation, and increased private investment in downtowns.
