Event to Raise Awareness and Funds to Help Children with Dyslexia

Madison, Wis. (April 20, 2011) — The Children’s Dyslexia Center – Madison (pka the Madison Masonic Learning Center) is now accepting registration and pledges for its second annual Walk to Help Children With Dyslexia. This family friendly event will take place on Saturday, May 21, 2011, with registration at 7:30 AM. The 5K walk will start at 8:30 AM at the Shelter House at Henry Vilas Park (606 South Randall Avenue). Pre-registration fees are $15 for adults ($20 if registering the day of the walk) and $5 for children under 12. Group discounted registration fees are available. There will be prizes for top fund-raising participants as well as free chair massages for everyone as time permits. All funds raised from the walk will support tutoring services for children with dyslexia in the greater Madison area.

The Children’s Dyslexia Center – Madison (CDCM) offers one-on-one tutoring to help students meet their full educational potential in reading, writing, and spelling. CDCM teaches students to become independent, lifelong learners and to gain both skill and confidence in their ability to succeed in school. The Center serves students between the ages of 7 and 18 at no cost to the students or their families. In its 10 years of operating, the Center has graduated 94 students.

All tutors are certified in the Orton-Gillingham model, a multi-sensory approach that uses phonetics to emphasize visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles to read, write, and spell. Under this approach, children are taught how to process language and how to read all over again and progress is made in small, readily quantifiable steps.

Children’s Dyslexia Center – Madison is one of 50 such Centers sponsored by Scottish Rite Masons 32°; those 50 Centers are located across 15 states helping children overcome their learning difficulties. The Center in Madison opened in 2001 to meet the needs of Greater Madison area children struggling with dyslexia. The Center’s tutoring helps students with dyslexia to gain skill and confidence, become independent learners, and achieve their full educational potential in reading, writing, and spelling. The center serves students between the ages of 7 and 18 at no cost to the students or their families. In its 10 years of operating, the Center has graduated 94 students.
