The WVMA, along with the Wisconsin Veterinary Practice Managers Association, Wisconsin Veterinary Technicians Association and the Fox Valley Humane Association were able to raise $3,754 for the Vest-A-Dog program.
Wisconsin Vest-A-Dog, a non-profit and tax deductible organization, was started by Donna Morgan in 2005. After seeing a K-9 police dog shot in the line of duty while watching America’s Most Wanted on TV, so she called the national Vest-A-Dog Network. Donna was surprised to hear that no one was working on vesting dogs in Wisconsin, so the Janesville native began the local Wisconsin chapter. The high cost of a bullet and stab proof vest, $840, has left almost 200 K-9 officers un-vested in Wisconsin. Many times, these vests are the only protection that K-9 officers have until their human partners arrive on scene.
Due to the remarkable donations received at the recent WVMA Annual Convention Oct. 7-10, 4 vests and additional funds were donated. One vest will be donated to the Columbus Police Department and another to a SWAT K-9 in St. Croix County. The remaining two vests will be given to K-9 police dogs of the greatest need.
