Bill Helps Grow Wisconsin’s Bio Industry

MADISON – Today, Governor Doyle signed into law Senate Bill 279, a bill aimed at promoting biofuels in Wisconsin.

“With this bill, Governor Doyle and the Wisconsin legislature took an important step in helping to grow Wisconsin’s bio industry,” said Joshua Morby, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Bio Industry Alliance.

The bill will do several things to promote biofuels production and use in Wisconsin. First, it extends a $5,000 per station pump credit to blender pumps which will give consumers the option to choose from a variety of gas and ethanol blends.

Further, it will assure that local fuel distributors will be able to blend their own fuels, stopping the practice of big out-of-state oil companies doing the only blending and failing to pass along the savings to consumers.

The bill also sets higher goals for the State for biofuels use, clarifies that the biofuels industry is eligible for industrial revenue bonds and ag diversification grants, and streamlines state programs for producing next generation biofuels.

“It’s clear that Governor Doyle and the leaders in the legislature truly understand the important role biofuels play in protecting our environment, ending our dependence on foreign oil, and growing our economy,” Morby said. “Senate Bill 279 is important for Wisconsin’s environment and its economy, and we thank Governor Doyle and the Assembly and State Senate for passing this legislation.”

The Wisconsin Bio Industry Alliance is a diverse group of businesses, environmental groups and statewide and local organizations that have come together to build both public and legislative awareness of the Bio Industry in Wisconsin.
