Governor Doyle announces $8.8 million for Madison area

MADISON— Wired Wisconsin on Wednesday praised the announcement that Madison, Middleton, and Monona would be receiving a total of $8.8 million for expanded broadband internet access for schools, hospitals, and other public and community organizations.

“It’s great to see this continued investment in Wisconsin’s broadband infrastructure,” said Thad Nation, Executive Director of Wired Wisconsin. “By expanding high-speed internet access, we can increase economic development and educational opportunities in these communities, and continue to put Wisconsin on the cutting edge of technology.”

The funds were awarded to the Metropolitan United Fiber Network project, which is working with Xiocom Wireless to develop nearly 100 miles of broadband infrastructure and expand access to business incubators, area hospitals, colleges, public safety organizations, and many households and businesses.

A total of $5.1 million of the funds were provided as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, with an additional $3.7 million provided by partners in the project.

Governor Doyle also recently announced nearly $23 million in federal funding to match $5.7 million from the state to help provide broadband internet access to hundreds of sites in all 72 counties.
