WHITEWATER The new College of Business and Economics building at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater continues to impress.

Timothy J. Hyland Hall was recently named a best real estate project by The Business Journal of Milwaukee and a top project in 2009 by Wisconsin Builder magazine and The Daily Reporter.

Hyland Hall was named one of the two Best Real Estate Projects in Education by The Business Journal of Milwaukee. The award recognizes the building’s sustainability, architectural design and accessibility.

In order to build Hyland Hall, three existing buildings were razed. However, nearly 98 percent of the demolition waste was recycled, said Interim Dean Lois Smith. Despite challenging weather conditions, the building finished on budget and opened on schedule.

The building’s design has a corporate look and feel, and its layout offers students, faculty and staff members and visitors easy access. Hyland Hall has a 400-seat auditorium, computer labs, two 150-seat lecture halls, and student project areas.

“Its state-of-the-art technology, functional classroom designs and student study areas have transformed the college,” Smith said.

Hyland Hall was also named a Top Project for 2009 by Wisconsin Builder magazine and The Daily Reporter. Top projects include developments that have made a difference in communities, triumphed despite difficult circumstances, or introduced a new technique to the industry. Hyland Hall will be featured in the May issue of Wisconsin Builder.

“Hyland Hall has become a campus hub of activity,” said Smith. “Its design creates a community within the college and a beautiful showcase for our programs and outreach activities.”

The building’s unique blue windows by EFCO have also garnered praise and are currently featured on the company’s Web site home page (http://www.efcocorp.com).

Earlier this year, Miron Construction received the Excellence in Construction-New Construction award from the Division of State Facilities for its work on the Hyland Hall building project.

In addition, Kahler Slater, the Milwaukee-based architectural firm that designed Hyland Hall, is the same company that designed the renowned Milwaukee Art Museum’s Calatrava addition.

“It’s recognitions like this that show Hyland Hall’s excellence,” Smith said.

“Seeing students stay in the building between classes, and seeing that Hyland Hall has become a gathering place, is very rewarding,” she said.
