Madison, Wis. – Theresa Lehman, Director of Sustainable Services, and Corey Brumbaugh, Vice President for Business Development for Miron Construction Co., Inc., are on Capitol Hill this week as part of a congressional advocacy visit.
Lehman and Brumbaugh are meeting with U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and congressional and Senate leaders, to advocate for USGBC to promote the benefits of high performance sustainable buildings, focusing on the federal and state policies centered on energy reduction and renewable energy technology.
“This trip was a great opportunity to highlight the creation of green jobs, annual operational savings and reduced carbon emissions as a result of energy and water efficiency, and the influence indoor air quality has on human health,” said Brumbaugh. “This opportunity also provided us a platform to provide testimony on the impact the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act has had on our organization by providing our clients with a financing mechanism to move their projects forward, which has provided over $200 million in additional revenue. These projects were vital in keeping Wisconsin’s talented construction professionals employed. Miron Construction is recognized as a national leader in green building practices, and we look forward to building on our success by further promoting sustainability across all industry sectors.”
The U.S. Green Building Council developed the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating systems, which provides the framework for environmentally-friendly design, construction, and operation of new and existing building projects across various market segments.
“We are honored to be trusted volunteer constituents and congressional advocates,” said Lehman. “It’s gratifying to be asked to share stories with our national leaders about how teachers have been able to go off of their allergy and asthma medication and discuss reduced student absenteeism because they are in healthy indoor environments. The results are measurable and statistics are astounding; students in green schools have averaged 20% higher scores on national test standards because they are able to learn in environments that boast natural daylighting, have high indoor air quality, are comfortable and acoustically sound. Green schools are a win-win-win for students and teachers, the taxpayers and the environment. It’s refreshing to see referendums being passed by communities who understand the importance of greening their schools in one of the worst economic downturns in history. That alone speaks volumes.”
Miron has constructed fourteen LEED certified projects that have been awarded Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum certification levels. Another eighteen projects are in various stages of seeking LEED certification.
