J.K. Lee Black Belt Academy: Martial artist explains powerful technique that deters bullies

The transformative power of martial arts is not only the focus of the new Karate Kid movie, it’s also the topic of a number of upcoming events in Milwaukee next week.

Master Chan Lee, who operates five J.K. Lee Black Belt Academies in metro Milwaukee, will offer specific strategies for dealing with bullies Monday, June 7. The beneficial presentation, which is open to families with children ages 6 and older, will be held from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center 6255 N. Santa Monica Dr., Whitefish Bay. The cost is $18 per family or $10 per family for members.

“There’s been such an awareness lately of the damage done to children at the hands of bullies,” Lee said. “Thanks to movies like the Karate Kid, people understand the connection between self-confidence and martial arts. And now I’ve found a way to bring the discussion to the next level, and offer proven solutions to the bully problem.”

Lee, in cooperation with the Verbal Judo Institute and Dr. George Thompson, has developed a course, Verbal Self Defense for Youth. This program, which is credentialed by the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, is taught as part of the martial arts curriculum at his martial arts schools.

The Karate Kid movie opens Friday, June 11; Lee will hold a free half-hour bullying talk at 7 p.m. at the Rosebud Theater prior to the 7:30 p.m. screening. The Rosebud is located at 6823 W. North Ave. in Wauwatosa.

On Saturday, June 12, Lee’s students will be performing a demonstration at the Rosebud prior to the afternoon matinee. The J.K. Lee Demo Team will perform at 3 p.m. There is no charge for this show.
