(JANESVILLE, Wis.)—A vital corridor for Wisconsin’s economy got welcome news today as Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan urged the Department of Transportation to take quick action on the modernization of Interstate 39/90 between Beloit and Madison, Forward Janesville’s I-39/90 NOW Coalition announced.

The proposed project, which would expand the roadway from four to six lanes and improve interchange access, must be approved by the Transportation Projects Commission and the Legislature before construction can begin.

“Speaker Sheridan’s support will effectively help transform this ‘congestion corridor’ to a ‘commerce corridor’,” Dan Cunningham, Forward Janesville’s vice president of government relations and education, said. “This project is one of the best economic development tools the state could provide south-central Wisconsin as we seek to rebuild our economy and create jobs.”

The 45.5-mile segment of I-39/90 identified begins from U.S. Highway 12/18 near Madison and ends at the Wisconsin-Illinois border. The WisDOT projects a 50 percent increase by 2030 of the current 80,000 vehicles that travel the corridor each day.
