Dairy Farmers across the nation have been making positive changes to their operations in order to protect our natural resources. Most often the general public does not hear about these “innovative projects” that are implemented in order to protect our air, water and quality of our environment. We don’t always hear about them because most producers implement such changes not to receive recognition, but rather because it is the right thing to do for their farm, their family, their community and their environment.

Some projects are considered large and possibly cost prohibitive, while others may just include some simple but effective changes. Regardless of the size, any effort to protect the area in which one lives and farms is a benefit to the future of the industry and our state. Digesters that utilize the methane from manure are being built to create energy for our farms and our neighbors. Wind mills are being resurrected to provide wind energy. New technologies and equipment are being developed and implemented to protect our soils, crops and animals. Farmers are finding ways to utilize their waste products to create something new and useful. They are doing more with less water, less feed, less herbicides and pesticides, and less energy. Every effort put forth to implement a positive change helps reduce a producer’s carbon footprint. Farmers are continuing their efforts to be sustainable in a changing world.

The Dairy Business Association would like to honor an area producer for the positive steps they have taken to make a difference for our environment. Not only do we want to recognize the difference this producer is making — but more importantly, we want to share with others the impact such changes can have on our farms and in our communities. If you have taken the steps to make positive changes on your farm, or if you know of an area producer who has gone above and beyond local, state and federal regulations, please visit the Dairy Business Association website at http://www.widba.com to review the application or call 920-347-0499 for more information. We embrace the opportunity to honor said producer during World Dairy Expo 2010.
