American Speed Association: Super late model excitement returns to Dells Raceway Park

ASAMT HEADS BACK TO THE 1/3 MILE OVAL THIS SATURDAY

By: Kari Shear-Carlson

(Wednesday, August 11, 2010) Wisconsin Dells is known for its beautiful, woodsy landscapes, camping, water parks, go-karts, and various other tourist attractions. Yet there is only one attraction that offers heart-pounding excitement and constant live action that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Dells Raceway Park, “Wisconsin’s Showcase Short Track,” welcomes the American Speed Association® Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment and grandstay.net this Saturday, August 14th for the “Wisconsin Dells 100.”

Dells Raceway Park is an ASA Member Track which opened in 1958 on 38 acres of beautiful Wisconsin land. In 2006, the track closed in the middle of the season, but reopened with a fresh face-lift for the 2007 season. This will be the first night of Super Late Model excitement at Dells Raceway Park in 2010 after owners made the decision not to host a weekly Super Late Model division.

Dells Raceway Park is known for its intense competition, fierce battles, late race spins and out of nowhere wins. As drivers attempt to make it, as veteran Wisconsin hero Dick Trickle said, “the roundest oval possible,” by digging deep into the 9 degree turns and drifting high on the 6 degree straightaways, fans can expect to see some of the most exciting racing to date.

Over the past three years, fans have witnessed battles between some of the best in the Midwest. In 2009, the ASAMT made two stops at the 1/3 mile asphalt oval. Steve Carlson and Frank Kreyer were victorious while Steve Holzhausen finished second in both events.

With only four events left in the 2010 season, and only 126 points separating first through sixth, the battles are starting to heat up. Steve Carlson currently has a 28 point lead over second place Chris Wimmer. Last year the two made contact in turn two taking both out of contention for the win. Local driver, Jeff Kendall holds the Super Late Model track record with a 13.194. In 2009, Dan Fredrickson turned a 13.404 and current track record holder, Jeff Kendall turned a 13.455 each gaining the “ECHO Chain Saws and Oregon Chains Quick Cut Qualifier” awards.

Along with the ASAMT, the ASA OREGON Midwest Truck Tour, ASA Sportsman Tour and local Bandit division will be competing on Saturday. Dells Raceway Park is located just outside of downtown Wisconsin Dells at N1070 Smith Road. Fan gates open at 4:00PM, qualifying begins at 4:30PM with racing to follow at 6:30PM.
