— As a self-described “baseline techie geek from way back when,” Thad Nation jumped at the chance to head up the newly formed Wired Wisconsin — a group that wants to boost technological growth in Wisconsin and bring broadband to all regions of the state.
The non-profit group’s top issue will be broadband access in Wisconsin — outside of the state’s metropolitan areas, Nation said broadband options are spotty.
“In urban areas, it’s pretty good,” he said. “But there are limitations there. As you get into some of the poorer neighborhoods, you start to see some question about speeds and access rates.”

— A Milwaukee web designer is trying to do his part to help out fledgling businesses in the down economy: he’s created a Web site, newbusinessmilwaukee.com, that offers free advertising for startups in the Milwaukee area.
The creator, Tom Story, launched the site about one month ago and currently features more than 30 new Milwaukee area businesses.

— As media organizations seek new ways to deliver information in the midst of a severe advertising downturn, it’s not surprising that the experimentation may create some concern among traditional users.
But visits to a number of newsrooms around the state in recent days have WisBusiness columnist Jennifer Sereno convinced that readers, viewers, and yes – even “Tweeters” (users of Twitter.com) – stand to benefit in major ways from these efforts to advance the industry.

— Dane County residents asked Public Service Commission members Tuesday to choose an underground route along Madison’s Beltline for a proposed 345-kilovolt transmission line.
But American Transmission Co. officials said they want to build the line above ground from Middleton to Rockdale in eastern Dane County because it’s less expensive.
“The project will cost about $300 million more to run it underground from State Highway 51 to the Middleton substation,” said ATC spokeswoman Sarah Justus.
