— North central Wisconsin has the highest health insurance costs in the state, while the south central region of the state continues to have the lowest costs, according to an analysis from left-leaning Citizen Action Wisconsin.

The metro areas with the highest costs are Wausau, Stevens Point, Wisconsin Rapids, Kenosha, La Crosse and Eau Claire, according to the report. Health insurance costs statewide rose 9 percent in 2009 and 179 percent in the last decade, faster than the 120 percent increase nationwide.

U.S. Rep. Ron Kind, D-La Crosse, said the report shows health care costs are “way too expensive … and going up way too fast.” He said the rising health care costs are causing wage stagnation for working families, and the results of the analysis sharpen the need for national health care reform.

“Not passing health care reform really isn‚Äôt an option,” Kind said.

— In a new BizOpinion column, the president of the Independent Business Association of Wisconsin argues that it’s time to extend the program that offered $375 million in Small Business Administration stimulus loans.

Jeff Hoffman says “the extension and expansion of the SBA stimulus funds are an appropriate measure for growth that Congress should act upon immediately.”
